The DC Super Pets movie has gotten a release date for the summer of 2021. Warner Bros. recently came out with a list of release dates for upcoming DC films, alerting fans to when they can expect their favorite heroes and villains to return. But amidst the excitement for Matt Reeves' The Batman and The Suicide Squad was the listing of another film that may not have been on many people's radar. But it has been confirmed that the summer of 2021 will begin with Super Pets.
The Super-Pets got their beginning in 1962 when they appeared in Adventure Comics #293. Since then, the idea of a team of animal superheroes has hung around, becoming a chapter book series by Capstone Publishers. Much like the Justice League, the Super-Pets team has included a host of different characters, including Ace the Bat-Hound, Krypto the Super-Dog, and Streaky the Super-Cat. Cartoon Network would also create a series of shorts featuring the furry crimefighters on DC Nation. Last year it was announced that Warner Bros. was going to be giving the Super Pets a feature film of their own.

The news was originally reported by THR. Super Pets will kick off the summer with a release date of May 21, 2021. The Batman will follow in June and The Suicide Squad will come out in August.
Not much else is known about the movie so far. When the film was first confirmed last July, Jared Stern was announced as director. Super Pets will become Stern's second time as a director, with the first being Netflix's Happy Anniversary. But while he is still new to directing, Stern has plenty experience as a writer. Among his list of credits are the screenplays for Mr. Popper's Penguins, The Lego Batman Movie, and The Lego Ninjago Movie. He was also one of the creators for Dr. Ken, which stared Ken Jeong.
With so little known about the film, it's difficult to discern what direction DC hopes to take it. It remains unclear if the film will be a cartoon or more of a live-action/animation hybrid. Judging by director Stern's previous credits, it looks like Warner Bros. is considering a more lighthearted feel, unlike most of the existing DC films. It is also likely that the studio may be planning for a more family friendly film, hoping Stern can create something similar to the Batman and Ninjago Lego movies. That Super Pets is indeed happening might come as a surprise it could prove to be a welcome one in the ever expanding universe of superhero films.
