MAC: Lip Duo

I'm sure most of us remember the days when you would spent hours wandering make up counters in hopes that eventually you would find the perfect lip liner to go with your new lipstick. I mean it wasn't that long ago that lip kits first started to emerge on the market but lip kits have single-handedly made this struggle obsolete. The rise of the lip kit happened very quickly due to Kylie Jenner and her formidable brand, Kylie Cosmetics. As with the Kylie lips kits, most kits contain a matte liquid lipstick and a liner. I have to admit, I've always wondered why it was necessary to have a liquid lipstick with a lip liner as you can get a bold, sharp edge with liquid lipstick however who am I to argue with something that has taken on a life of its own. So many brands have tried to replicate the success of Kylie Cosmetics but so far no one has been able to mimic her success.

The lip kit has even made its way down into drugstore territory, with brands such as Barry M making their own version. Some brands have taken this concept even further and have adapted it to suit their brand. Brands like Urban Decay and MAC have included some of their most beloved products instead of using their liquid lipsticks. Let's face it, MAC are known for their wonderful lipsticks and they are iconic within the beauty community. MAC have now used them to create Lip Duos and they provide an alternative to the traditional lip kit whilst maintaining what makes them so good. Not only have they created the Lip Duos using their classic lipsticks but they have used some of their most popular liners as well.

I know a lot of people do not like the formula of a traditional liquid lipstick which is the formula that usually features in these sets. The MAC Lip Duos provide a nice alternative for anyone who would like the ease of buying a lip kit but isn't a fan of the typical drying formula. I would be surprised if you are reading this and haven't at some point tried a MAC lipstick but for those of you who are unsure, they have one of the most vast ranges of lipsticks: both in terms of formula and shade. All of these Lip Duos feature MACs matte formula. They have kept to the traditional matte finish but they aren't quite as drying as the traditional liquid version. In my opinion they did a good thing by creating these duos with their lipsticks rather than their liquid lipsticks. In comparison I think their liquid lipsticks are quite weak. They are very drying and I do not think they wear very well. I must admit that I haven't tried any of the ones they launched more recently, I have only tried a few colours from the original line up which most people didn't like. I hear the newer shades they launched were much better but I haven't tried them so I can't comment on them.

The matte formula is very creamy in the standard lipsticks. It doesn't feel as drying but it stays put which is exactly what you want from a matte. A matte formula is never, not going to be drying purely because that is the nature of the lipstick formula but these are some of the better matte lipsticks in terms of drying. If you do have any pre-existing dryness then these lipsticks will exaggerate it but that is nothing that a little prep won't help. Some of the MAC matte lipsticks are my favourite ever shades and three of them actually feature in these Lip Duos.

Looking at the massive lipstick range MAC create can feel quite overwhelming but these sets only come in 8 shades so that immediately limits your choice. MAC have used their 8 top matte shades: HoneyloveVelvet Teddy, Mehr, Whirl, Chili, Ruby Woo, Diva and Antique Velvet. There is a real range of shades, so every shade you could possibly need is covered. Honeylove is the lightest shade, moving into some deeper nudes and ending at rich deeper shades such as Diva and Antique Velvet. I actually own 4 of these shades with three of them featuring in my Top 5 MAC Lipsticks. The lipstick that I surprisingly do not own from this line up is Ruby Woo. One of the most talked about MAC lipsticks, which is rumoured to suit everyone is not in my vast collection. I don't know why I have not got round to buying it but one day I will commit myself. The Lip Duo I went for was Honeylove/Subculture

When I was shopping, I didn't intend on getting a Lip Duo but I couldn't decide between two lipsticks for my Back To MAC. I had seen so much about Honeylove through Lydia Millen who always used to talk about this lipstick. I had always wanted to try this shade but as it is such a light nude I always worried that it would make me resemble the walking dead. Luckily this lipstick has quite a warm, rose undertone so it has a little bit of life in it which is exactly what I need. This shade is a very easy to wear nude but I have a feeling it would not suit everyone. When I was trying this the sales assistant actually suggested using a darker line if I wasn't too sure about the colour. This peaked my interest in the Lip Duos.

Even though Subculture is necessarily a darker shade, it is much warmer so it adds that little bit more warmth to the lipstick which makes it perfect for me to wear. When I saw that they did Lip Duos I thought I would give it a go as I have really been into lip liners lately and this made it a thousand times easier to find a matching one. With standard lipsticks I can understand the need for a liner, it makes the edging look more precise and allows you to create the shape you want. I still don't fully understand a liner with a liquid lipstick.

The texture of the MAC lip liners are hit or miss for most people. They are very pigmented but the formulation is very stiff. It isn't the most difficult lip liner to work with but at the same time it isn't the easiest. I really think it comes down to what you prefer. I do not mind these lip liners as you can still get a precise line without too much effort but I do prefer the lip liners which come with the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits. I actually use the liner for Candy K with Velvet Teddy as they are quite a similar match. I like MAC liners, but I don't love them. Overall the Lip Duo just makes it easy for lazy people like me who don't want to search high and low for a matching liner.

I think this is such an interesting idea as they are clearly trying to make their way into the always popular lip kit market. Prior to having her own beauty brand, Kylie Jenner, used to use MACs Velvet Teddy so it feels very full circle that MAC would now be influenced by Jenner. I think these Lip Duos are great. If you are a MAC lipstick lover they contain some of their most well known shades and they are paired with a matching liner, what more could you want? They would also make a lovely gift for anyone who has always wanted a MAC lipstick but might not be able to buy one themselves. When I was starting out in make up, I would have loved to have received one of these. They are already packed and even though I'm not sold on the packaging it makes it easier as a gift giver. If you are looking for a cute Christmas present for under £30 this is a good one. Through buying the Lip Duo you actually do not save any money, the only difference is you get it in one box rather than two little ones. If you really do not like this packaging then they can also be bought separately.

These are supposed to be limited edition but I bought my Duo back in July so they have been around a long time and continue to be in stock online. I have no idea when they will stop doing these but I hope isn't soon as they make life that little bit easier. My colour recommendations would be, of course: Velvet Teddy, Mehr and Diva.
