Shazam! Movie Star Unveils New Poster, Confirms New Trailer Coming

https://ift.tt/2G3saIO

A new poster has been released for DC's Shazam! movie has arrived, with a fresh trailer soon to follow. While the original Shazam! trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, star Zachary Levi has teased that the next preview will be hitting the scene shortly after 2019 gets underway.

Set in the same DC Extended Universe as films like Man of Steel and Wonder Woman before it, Shazam! reveals what happens when young foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is granted the magical ability to change into the superhero Shazam! (Levi) simply by calling his name. Shazam! was directed by Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation helmsman David F. Sandberg, making it the second DCEU movie to be directed by a filmmaker best known for their work in the horror genre, after this month's Aquaman (itself, directed by Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring filmmaker James Wan). Though, you probably wouldn't have guessed that from the Shazam! marketing.

Case in point: the promotional images for Shazam! so far have shown Levi's superhero drinking soda and, in the case of the brand-new poster, blowing a pink bubblegum bubble and playing on his phone, thus calling attention to the fact that he's (quite literally) a grown superhero with the heart and mind of a child. The film's new trailer - which, per his Instagram page, Levi promises will arrive "in the new year" rather than this month - will no doubt continue to highlight that element of the story, in keeping with the rest of the marketing. In the meantime, you can check out the new Shazam! one-sheet below.

In addition to Angel and Levi, the Shazam! cast includes Djimon Hounsou as the nameless Wizard who grants Billy his super-powers and Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, a supervillain who controls "deadly forces of evil" (per the film's synopsis)... and only Billy/Shazam! can stop him. Odds are good that the second Shazam! trailer will feature more in the way of finished footage from Shazam! and Dr. Sivana's fights in the film, in addition to more refined visual effects and CGI. Sandberg has likewise confirmed that Shazam's transformation in the first trailer isn't the finished version and may look "quite different" in the movie's theatrical cut.

As for when, exactly, the new Shazam! trailer will arrive: early to mid-January would make sense, assuming that Warner Bros. sticks to a 2019 trailer release (like Levi indicated). M. Night Shyamalan's comic book-inspired superhero thriller Glass will hit theaters around that time, so there's a reasonable chance that the second Shazam! trailer will be attached to the film in theaters. A January launch would also give the trailer some breathing room from the big promos that have yet to drop this month (including, those for Avengers 4 and Spider-Man: Far from Home), lest it get overshadowed by the competition.
